Health Costs of Street Homelessness
A report by the Department of Health (2010) estimate that the cost of unscheduled care for homeless people is eight times that of the general population. They are also far more likely to use these services with estimates suggesting they have 3.2 times as many inpatient admissions as the general population. Estimates of how much street homelessness costs the public services vary but Lankelly Chase with Heriot-Watt University (2015) estimate they are between £14,300 and £21,200 per person per year (3 to 4 times the average cost of an ‘average’ adult.
