Homelessness
Homelessness is more than rough sleeping. It includes people living in sheds, garages and other unconventional buildings; sofa surfing; hostels and unsuitable temporary accommodation, such as B&Bs.
People experiencing homelessness have far worse health and social care outcomes than the general population. The average age of death for people experiencing homelessness is 43 years for women and 45 years for men (ONS, 2022). A range of barriers can make it difficult to navigate the mainstream health system, including stigma and discrimination; fragmented, siloed and rigid services; long waiting lists; strict eligibility criteria; and lack of appropriate communication.
These pages have been put together to support stakeholders to develop and improve support for this population.
