Physical Activity & Inequalities

The “Understanding and addressing inequalities in physical activity” report from 2021, identified a range of inequalities in individual’s physical activity levels from different protected characteristic groups. The report also highlighted urgent action which is needed to ensure the physical activity workforce is diversely represented. The report recommended 9 key actions that are needed to help address the inequalities in physical activity:

  1. Appropriate engagement
  2. Knowledge of the local community
  3. Meaningful consultation
  4. Community role models
  5. Flexible client centred approach
  6. Providing a diverse choice
  7. Holistic approach
  8. Measuring impact
  9. Partnership working

 

The “Proportionate Universalism” report by Martyn Allison from March 2021 details the importance of, and methods for, utilising the proportionate universalism approach in physical activity to help address the engrained inequalities that exist within the sector.
